ASSESS STUDENTS THROUGH INQUIRY.

The transformative learning experiences at my E-portfolio are designed to help our students grow both in and out of the classroom. Each day is filled with opportunities to experience new educational, social, and emotional situations.

Reading/ Math/Writing

Addendum: These are just some of the activities and strategies that we work on a daily basis. Before taking this course, I've always thought of assessments as a way to check for students' understanding, not as a way of learning. It has impacted my way of teaching tremendously since now I gather evidence of learning in the most unthinkable places such as watching my students interact in the play ground. Although my district provides me with traditional assessments for the most part, I'm learning different ways to assess my students. The following pieces of work show how my class and I analyze reading passages. We look at every detail on the story and make sure we understand the main idea of each paragraph or definitions of unknown words. When students come across new words, we refer to our prior knowledge to infer its meaning. My students have fun reading and analyzing passages, it is when they come to answering questions that they have a difficult time. Even as a teacher, sometimes I notice that the questioning is abstract and vague. During my Math block, students are transitioning into the English language, therefore, their struggle is twice as much the all English students. We tend to focus on clue words. The writing instruction is very challenging since students don't learn how to write in one year, is not a concept, it is a process that they develop since early years. I strongly believe that after taking this course my teaching skills and techniques will improve to better serve my students.

ASSESSMENT LITERACY IS A PROCESS OF GATHERING EVIDENCE OF STUDENTS' LEARNING.

Assessing Students

  • Begin with a clear purpose.

  • Start with a specific objective.

  • Enrich lessons with relevant activities.

  • Communicate results to check for understanding.

  • Link assessment.

  • Addendum:  I have many ways for assessing my students, but all of them start with a purpose in mind to reach a specific objective. It can be a class discussion, a traditional assessment or implementing project based learning project. They will all lead to students' progress and help me prepare more lessons to further assist students. After this course, I intend to implement other types of assessments such as keeping a portfolio with students' work to monitor their growth more effectively. The more a know about my students' weaknesses, the greater are my opportunities to help them and I can achieve all of these through assessment literacy.
